A mid morning visit to the big market or a quick stop at our small market early on Saturdays. Melons and eggplant are usually at the top of my list.

Two of my favorite things to buy at the market are spring radishes and sweet, crunchy peas.

Our local market starts in April and strawberries show up towards the end of May. From then on, my favorites are whatever catches my eye.

Right now, it's tomatoes of every color and kind and stone fruit. Apricots are gone, but peaches and plums? Oh my!

This summer, a new vendor brought in mushroom grow bags. I grew three flushes of pink oyster mushrooms on the kitchen counter. So much fun and really delicious. Wish I could share a photo.

August is my favorite month, when peaches, berries, corn and tomatoes are abundant. Our farmers market in the Seattle area is open from May through September and each month brings something to indulge in, whether mounds of fresh asparagus or fresh peas or piles of crisp apples and pears. We have a standing appointment there early Saturday morning whenever we are in town!

What beautiful squash blossoms! Those are a prized market find for me! I love to stuff them with goat cheese and fry them. We are enjoying beautiful eggplants and tomatoes in our markets. Time for a pasta with eggplant and fresh tomato sauce.

On my recent visit to the market I purchased Swiss Chard. My mother always made this vegetable. Simply sauteed in a little evoo and garlic, it's sweet and savory. I also like buying celery, radishes and summer squash. There is nothing like fresh vegetables and fruit straight from the garden.

We never know how long the items have been in the supermarkets. Off season it's okay but during Summer and early Fall, Farmer's Markets are the way to go.

I live in the US but my husband and I visit Italy very often. We always make it a point to go to the weekly or daily markets so that we can buy cheese and meats, which can be vacuum sealed and taken home with us. I always bring an extra, empty piece of luggage so that we can bring back goodies from our trip. Whether that be olive oil, balsamic, dried porcini, pancetta, or risotto rice. We usually get a half wheel of Parmigiano that is cut and wrapped in smaller pieces. The last time I started getting pecorino from the market too! It’s so delicious and not at all like the pecorino we can buy at home. My extra bag easily weighs the limited 50 pounds!
