Hi Guilia, you always make me want to return to Italy, there was so much we didn’t see when we visited so many years ago. My favourite place to dine in Tuscany was in the small town of Certaldo, our friends questioned why I wanted to go there, but a recommendation by a true Italian took us to Osteria de Vicario up in the old town. Such a wonderful experience. And to have a ‘great’ set of knives should be everyone’s desire to have in their kitchen, and I agree, absolutely NO to serrated knives for steak, if it is good enough the serration is not necessary, my husband on the other hand will use one to my absolute distain. I do not buy tough steak!!!
I’m glad our stories can transport you back to Tuscany. Certaldo is such a nice town, out of the big tourist routes! And yes, I agree, everyone showily have a set of very good knives, they make cooking so much better and easier!
thank you, Flavio! They also have a special collection of knives for pastry chefs, to cut all the different baked goods (the knife for millefoglie is beautiful!)
Love your article, circa ten years ago we stayed in Poggio dei Medici in Via San Gavino near Scarperia in the summer. We were very impressed by the craftmanship and traditions of this borgo!
I love the tradition of knife-making that still remains pervasive in Italy. I just bought a set of very inexpensive handcrafted knives for a dear friend, and my plan is to do the same for our daughter.
Giulia, I’m sure you - or your mom and grandma! - remember the days when knife sharpeners Would come around to towns each week to sharpen knives on their bicycle powered sharpeners. Such a great tradition!
They are! I asked Berti is they had female artisans making knives, and they confirmed that yes, they had in the past, and they were highly skilled women!
I love that you are supporting and collaborating with these incredible artisans…and you got us a generous discount! I will definitely take advantage. Thank you for the interesting history and opportunity!
Love the article as a Chef you can never have enough amazing knifes! I also purchased your book “Cucina Povera” lots of lovely recipes.
Oh thank you so much!!
