Thank you Giulia. Perfect timing! My husband and I will be making our first trip to Puglia in a few weeks. We have days in Bari, Martina Franca area, and Lecce. We’ve even signed up for a seafood market tour and cooking class while in Lecce. We cannot wait to explore this new area of Italy and to taste the amazing food, wine, cheeses, olive oil....... I could go on and on. Safe travels and buon viaggio to you and your family.
This "Letter" was a delightful read! My husband and I are visiting Italy for the first time in October, and are already in love from afar with Italian cooking! We'll be in Tuscany for this visit, but I've added Salento and Lecce to our list of places we want to visit. Just ordered my copy of Cucina Povera and look forward to creating these recipes in our kitchen.
What a delightful 'letter'. Enjoy your trip. I'm awaiting my copy of Cucina Povera. My father was born in Benevento, Naples. My mother's mother and father were born there too. My mother (and my dad, when necessary) was a terrific cook. I always say, she could make grass taste great. During a time when my mom was in hospital, my dad did some cooking. Breakfast was bacon, eggs and toast. The surprise was his brussels sprouts. He made them in a sauce of onion and tomatoes. They became known as 'Uncle Dom's Sprouts'. Fond memories of my loving parents.
This is making me dream of going back to Puglia for pasticciotti and caffè leccese! And my husband goes crazy for recipes with onions, so I need to try making that onion strudel. It sounds incredible!
Oops, hit wrong spot. My maternal grandparents were from Russia, living in Paris when the Czar was overthrown. I remember dishes like borscht, stroganoff and perioge and still make them at times. They bring back such wonderful memories.
