Christmas is a bittersweet time for me. My parents were wonderful people. They did not have much money, but our holidays were special. I am carrying on many of their traditions and sharing them with my nephews, niece, and their children. It pleases me that they are interested in our family traditions and that they follow some of them,
FYI, I had my gallbladder removed in my mid-seventies. It was not difficult and recuperation was quick. I wish you good luck.
Today, I'm preparing for a cookie-bake with my niece and her children. She wants them to
learn how to make the traditional cookies of my mom. No chocolate chip or oatmeal cookies. Everybody makes those. We make anisette biscotti, knot cookies, and fruit and nut biscotti.
We'll include Linzer Tart cookies and shortbread dipped in chocolate. The children love shortbread.
Right now I'm soaking salted codfish and plan on making Bacala Salad. It's a Christmas
tradition along with Escarole Pie with pignoli nuts, raisins, and olives.
I wish you and your family (and all your subscribers) a Merry Christmas and many
Happy Holidays! Your newsletter is like a warm cozy blanket for me, giving me permission to let the Christmas hub bub go! I just returned to California from Germany and only have a few days to decorate the house, shop and cook for Christmas guests/family. It feels like too much before I even begin. Reading your newsletter, I feel some space and lightness opening up. I will simplify my plans and it will be enough.
I pray for your ongoing health issues and for your complete return to wellness. Our bodies are so highly intelligent and know how to do this.
Your family is blessed indeed to have you as their guide and support. And we are blessed to have you as our friend and to be inspired by you on so many levels. You are our treasure!
This was so beautifully written and I really connected to your outlook. I hope things improve with your health and that your surgery helps. It's hard to have so much on your plate while also parenting and running a business!
I can't wait to try some of these beautiful comforting recipes. Congrats on the new and improved From The Markets of Tuscany! I hope 2025 brings you all love and good health. Thanks for being a wonderful part of our 2024.
I JUST purchased your Markets of Tuscany cookbook from Amazon, in English, since we just moved to Pistoia last month. I love all the markets in Tuscany although we’ve just scratched the surface. Then I noticed that you had an updated version of the book coming out. Is the new version different enough to consider buying it too, especially since I live in the area now and can travel to these markets in person? Grazie
First, I’m reading this newsletter in my flannel pajamas, drinking hot coffee and oatmilk out of a beautiful Christmas mug from Williams Sonoma, eating buckwheat toast (GF) with almond butter and homemade apple chia jam (spiced with cinnamon and sweetened with maple syrup). I’ve been saving this newsletter for a morning I can enjoy reading the whole thing. I hope your holiday is peaceful. I have that Wintering book on my kindle and completely forgot about it, so maybe this is the season I read it. Those chicken and potato meatballs sound perfect for a weeknight dinner around here- I bookmarked the post, thank you. And thank you for sharing and writing such delightful letters throughout the year. Merry Christmas!
Well said Giulia! All the best to you and your family (any may your hot water bottle always be just warm enough)
I agree with the idea of a season of learning - winter is when I plan what to plant in my vegetable garden for the year and plan the menus for next week (things slow down enough for both to occur). I also find that not knowing where my phone is - is a good thing.
Of course, I'm cooking, and it's one hobby that combines learning with relaxing, for me. Starting with a well-crafted recipe like yours, make the entire process enjoyable with the bonus of wonderful results to share with my family and friends.
All the best to you and all in this community, happy holidays and best wishes for a wonderful new year.
Thanks for the reminder, Giulia, to use the time to slow down as well as celebrate. I'm excited about your market book making a re-appearance, as I missed out last time around. It should be evocative of our own time in Tuacany and Umbria, exploring the markets. Buon Natale!
